Ulverston Town Council is responsible for the maintenance of public green space in Ulverston at Gill Banks and Little Hoad. Gill Banks is the start of the Cumbria Way walk to Carlisle.
Gill Banks can be accessed from from the Gill in the centre of the town through the wood to fields leading on to Old Hall Road.
A volunteer group called Gill Banks Action Group support the work of the council in keeping Gill Banks maintained through pruning, planting and letting the Town Council know when any works need to be attended to. Recently the council has installed new fencing and repaired the pavement on the top path, and carries out regular tree surveys and undertakes work where required by a qualified tree surgeon.
The Gill Banks Action group working parties are held every month (usually on a Sunday), and also meet in the Rose & Crown pub on King Street every 3 months to plan ahead for the upcoming season. If you would like to be involved in any way, please contact the Town Clerk on admin@ulverstoncouncil.org.uk or 01229 585778.
Little Hoad is the green space below Hoad and can be accessed from Chittery Lane.
In March 2022, a Town Council project saw 21 trees planted on Litte Hoad by by local schools, nurseries and community groups as part of the commemoration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee for the Queen’s Green Canopy project. The event was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Claire Hensman, and the Ulverston Mayor, Bob Brown, who both planted trees aong with teh community groups and schools.
All trees have been marked with official plaques. We look forward to watching them thrive and grow over the coming years!
