VJ Day 80 commemorations in Ulverston

VJ Day 80 commemorations in Ulverston

The VJ Day 80 commemorative service at the War Memorial led by the Ulverston Royal British Legion was well attended on Friday 15th August.

The Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Julie Barton, the Mayor of Ulverston, Cllrs Shirley-Anne Wilson, along with the Royal British Legion, the Police and Fire Service all laid wreaths.

Friday evening saw the Commemorative Beacon being lit on Hoad Hill. The Town Crier read the VJ Day Proclamation from the Sir John Barrow Monument, the Last Post was sounded by two members of Ulverston Town Band and a two minute silence was held. The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Paul Smith then lit the beacon at 9.15pm which burned brightly across the town until 10pm.

The event was also attended by Cllr and MP Michelle Scrogham, Cllr Graham Scrogham and many members of the public who were treated to stunning views as the sun set.

The Sir John Barrow Monument was lit in red, white and blue for the evening.
