After a 6-year absence, the Heart of Ulverston Award ceremony is making a welcome return to honour the people, businesses and organisations of the town.
PR and communications agency, 32 West, which was founded in the town, is bringing the much-loved event back with the support of local businesses and organisations.
If you would like to nominate an individual or organisation who has gone above and beyond for the benefit of Ulverston, or you’d like to find out more about the event, head to www.heartofulverston.co.uk to find out about the award categories and put forward your nomination.

Are you aware of the Ulverston CGP Trust Fund?
Groups and organisations can apply to the CGP Trust Fund for a grant to support a wide variety of projects including:
- Activities of local groups such as Cubs, Brownies, Scouts etc.
- Local sports clubs and teams
- Improving recreational facilities that are open to all residents
- Repair and improvement of local facilities and public areas
- Holding community events
- Planting of trees and flowers
- Contributing to the maintenance of local public buildings such as churches, village halls etc.
- Assisting in welfare projects for local residents
Grants are discretionary and will only be paid to constituted groups/charities and NOT to individuals.
Ulverston Town Council is managing the Ulverston CGP Trust Fund on behalf of Broughton in Furness publishers, CGP.
The trustees meet approximately every 6 weeks to review applications.

Ulverston Town Council have installed commemorative plaques at the 5 schools where commemorative trees were planted.
The trees were planted in October 2023 to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III and are now labelled with a plaque as a reminder for future generations to come.
The 5 schools where commemorative trees were planted are Croftlands Infants Primary School, Croftlands Junior School, Sir John Barrow Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School and Ulverston Victoria High School.
The annual Carols at The Coro event took place on Saturday 2nd December – a day that will certainly be remembered by many due to the amount of snow that also arrived that day.
Fortunately the snow didn’t put off our scheduled performers – Ulverston Training Band, Ulverston Town Band, Ulverston Choral Society and the St Mary’s Primary School Choir – and guests were treated to an array of Christmas classics and popular sing-a-longs throughout the matinee performance.
The second to last song, Jingle Bells, performed by Ulverston Town Band saw the Mayor of Ulverston, Counsellor Michelle Scrogham, joined by children from the audience and the Mayor of Dalton for a bell-ringing finale of festive cheer. 
Considering the lower than expected attendance, an incredible £411 was raised at the event which will go to local Ulverston charities, as chosen by the Mayor of Ulverston.
Thank you to everyone who travelled through the snow to ensure the performance was a success!

October saw the planting of several trees across the Ulverston area to commemorate the service of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III.
The Mayor of Ulverston, Michelle Scrogham, and Deputy Lieutenant, Julie Barton, helped by school children, planted trees at Croftlands Infants School, Croftlands Junior School, Sir John Barrow Primary, St Mary’s Primary and Ulverston Victoria High School.
Michelle and Julie were then joined by town councillors and Friends of Lightburn Park to plant a further two oak trees in Lightburn Park as part of the commemorative celebrations.

There will be a short act of Remembrance at the War Memorial from 10.50am – 11.00am led by the Royal British Legion. All welcome to attend.
Sunday 12th November 2023
Everybody is very welcome to take part in the parade, attend the church service and take part in the event at the War Memorial.
Parade details:
• Parade commences at 2.15pm from the Royal British Legion on Brogden Street led by Ulverston Town Band.
• Parade to Ulverston Parish Church via: Cross St, County Square, Theatre St, Benson St, Queen St, King St and Church Walk for a service at 2.30pm
• The parade reforms after the church service at approximately 3.30pm and returns via Church Walk and King Street to the War Memorial where there will be a short service and wreaths will be laid.
• The parade will dismiss and march back to the Royal British Legion via Market Street and Brogden Street.

Ulverston Town Council are delighted to be supporting the End Period Poverty Scheme by introducing free sanitary products in toilets in the town.
Mayor of Ulverston, Michelle Scrogham, has funded the relaunch of the scheme in the town through her Mayors Charity Fund.
She said “I had hoped that following Scotland’s decision to provide free sanitary ware in all public buildings, England would follow suit. When people are choosing between heating and eating, sanitary products become a luxury that’s low on the priority list, often resulting in women and young girls being stuck at home. This can have a devastating effect on their education and opportunities at work, leaving the poorest in society at an unfair disadvantage.”
The original scheme was set up by former Cllr Shirley-Anne Wilson and Cllr Sharon Webster who said “It’s almost 4 years since we launched the red box campaign for donations of sanitary wear, but sadly, Period Poverty is still here. Women and Girls are again finding it hard to buy sanitary wear and with cost of living rising this is a big worry. The period poverty agenda seems to have lost some of its momentum and we need to ensure that girls and women have free access without suffering shame or embarrassment. We are in 2023 and this issue needs addressing. There are pockets of deprivation in all areas of Cumbria and Barrow and South Lakeland are no different.”
Free sanitary products are now available from the toilets inside the Indoor Market, the public toilets at Gill Banks car park and the toilets inside The Coro.
