VE Day 80 events in pictures

The Royal British Legion held a short commemorative service at the War Memorial for the commemoration of VE Day 80 which was well attended along with several dignitaries and servicemen laying wreaths to mark the event  🇬🇧

The Mayor of Ulverston, Cllr Graham Scrogham lit a beacon on top of Hoad Hill at 9.30pm which burned bright over the town as the sun set.
We would like to thank the Town Crier, Peter Winston for reading the VE Day 80 Proclamation and both members of Ulverston Town Band for playing the Last Post. Thank you also to all who attended and enjoyed a pleasant (if a little chilly!) evening on Hoad.

Ulverston hosts a number of celebrated festivals and events throughout the year.

Did you know there are more conveniences available within the town, other than the public toilets at The Gill?

Thanks to the businesses in the town who have kindly offered the use of their facilities for free as part of the Ulverston Courtesy Toilet Scheme, there are now a number of alternatives across the town centre:

  • Coronation Hall
  • Costa Coffee
  • Indoor Market Hall
  • Royal British Legion (open evenings)
  • Ulverston Railway Station

The public convenience located near the Gill car park continues to be managed by Ulverston Town Council.

Charter Fun Day Celebrations 2024

The council-run Charter Fun Day took place on Saturday 7th September – an annual event to celebrate Ulverston being granted its Market Charter by King Edward 1st in 1280.

Town Crier, Peter Winston began the event with the ringing of the town bell and reading of the charter at 10.30am before the full day of events, entertainment and activities began.

Families were able to enjoy this free event with live music at the Market Cross from Ulverston Town Band, Char and Boom Dang.

Magic shows, model-train rides, games, henna, balloon modelling, walkabout characters, the human fruit machine, giant chess boards, fire engines, the Inshore hovercraft, local organisations

providing all kinds of family friendly activities were all on offer for families to enjoy.

The ever-popular Family Dog Show saw around 70 entries for categories: Handsomest Dog; Prettiest Dog; Waggiest Tail; Best Collar / Bandana; Best Trick and The Dog the Judges Would Like to Take Home. Ralph Spours compered the show, while Mayor Graham Scrogham had the difficult task of choosing a winner from the many deserving entrants.

Allotment awards were presented to allotment holders for the best and improved plots by Councillor Margaret Hornby.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped support the day as a volunteer, performer, organisation or as a visitor to the event.

Ulverston Lantern Festival 14th September

14th September 2024

2024 Theme – Story Time!

It’s ‘Story Time’ for Ulverston Lantern Festival 2024

Ulverston Lantern Festival aims to captivate thousands of people and inspire hundreds of lantern makers with wonderful heroes, villains, spacemen, super heroes, kings and queens, dogs and dragons and every other fantastical tale you’ve ever heard, read or seen with its ‘Story Time’ theme for the 2024 procession.

On Saturday September 14th Ulverston will once again come alive with a river of light that will start from four points around the town before converging on County Square to come together in a dazzling display, with the fireworks finale in Ford Park at the end of the evening.

Lantern kits priced at £6 are on sale from Appleseeds in Market Street, The Coronation Hall, Ulverston Market Hall, The Cumbria Way in Upper Brook Street, and Croftlands Launderette.

Lantern workshops will take place in the Coronation Hall on Sunday 8th Sept (2-6pm) and 9th-13th Sept (5:30-8:30pm), when absolute beginners and skilled lantern builders can come together to bring their ideas to light!

Lanterns Chair Chris Nelson explains: “The theme of the Festival changes each year and it is always a challenge to come up with something that excites and inspires. We think Story Time is one of our best. Every TV programme, every film, every play every book invariably tells a story so there is huge scope for people to create lanterns large and small.

“It could be a character or idea from a Once upon a time fairy tale, a droid from Star Wars, a hippogriff from Harry Potter or Harry himself. Inspiration might come from Captain hook, or his crocodile, Paddington bear, Pirates or Peter Rabbit. With the Festival featuring in an episode of Channel 5’s Cumbria – The Lakes and the Coast, we are expecting bigger crowds than ever on the night.”

Westmorland and Furness Local Plan Consultation

Westmorland and Furness Council is preparing its first Local Plan. The planning activity looks ahead 20 years from now, and considers how many new homes and workplaces our area needs, whilst also protecting our local and historic character, special landscapes, green spaces and environment.

The Local Plan will:
• set out how much new development (e.g. homes and employment sites) is needed to support our communities
• make sure new development is built in the right places and in a way which is best for people and the environment
• allocate sites for new housing and other development
• protect some areas and green spaces from development
• include policies that are used to decide planning applications
• plan for development relating to minerals and waste
Community conversations will be happening at drop-in sessions, when people can talk to council officers to find out more about the process and contribute. A session has already taken place at The Coro in Ulverston on 11th July. Forthcoming sessions in the Ulverston area include the Buccleuch Hall Lindal on 19th July, Askam & Ireleth Community Centre on 24th July, and Dalton Drill Hall on 1st August.
