Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate this year’s Charter Festival Fun Day – such a fantastic turn out to commemorate the awarding of the charter to Ulverston by King Edward I in 1280.
Ulverston’s Town Crier, Peter Winston, began the event with the ringing of the town bell and reading of the charter at 10.30am, before the full day of events, entertainment and activities began.
At Market Cross, performances from Ulverston’s Town Band, Ragazza and Boom Dang entertained the crowds throughout the day 
while in the afternoon, awards were presented to allotment holders for the best and most improved plots, with Mr Brown, who is in his 90’s, awarded as the Overall Winner.
At 2pm, we were blown away by the number of entries to the Family Dog Show – the Mayor of Ulverston, Michelle Scrogham, having the incredibly difficult job of judging and choosing the winners, before then heading to The Coro to judge entries for the Make-A-Mini-Market-Stall run by The Coro Craft Morning team.
Throughout the day, free face painting, balloons, magic shows, fire engines and the
inshore rescue team engaged children and adults alike, not to mention the numerous stalls manned by local organisations and charities
who provided activities, laughter and fun throughout.
A huge thank you to those organisations, stall holders and volunteers who helped and supported on the day, events like these couldn’t run without the time and skills given by our community.
Congratulations to the winner of the Charter Bowling Competition, Jeff Benson and runner up Harry Preston.

On behalf of the hosts for this year, Ulverston Conservative Bowling Club, I am sending you this report to thank you for the opportunity to be hosts in 2023, which we have enjoyed and were delighted to attract 32 entries. Thank you for arranging the visit of Mayor of Ulverston Cllr Michelle Scrogham to
make the draw on 21st August and also for the attendance of Deputy Mayor Cllr Dave Webster and his wife Cllr Sharon Webster, who came along to make the presentations to the winner, who was our own Jeff Benson, our Secretary, who worked so hard to prepare for the event, and helped to run proceedings on the day, along with some of our other members, who assisted in the kitchen, marking scorecards, measuring, and preparing the green in advance etc. Jeff won, versus the young bowler Harry Preston of Lindal in the final.
Although we as hosts had a few more competitors than the other participating teams, I’m pleased to say that Glaxo, King’s Head & Lindal were also well represented, supporting their players throughout. I was also pleased to see that the final had a young competitor from another club, and that he played a Glaxo player in his semi-final, ensuring that it was not just ourselves as hosts taking advantage of a home green, but our visitors were enjoying themselves, too.A number of photos were taken at the presentation to the winner, and although the competition is without a runners-up trophy, I ensured that Harry was congratulated by the Deputy Mayor, as well as the winner receiving the shield.

*DRAGLEY BECK FOOTBRIDGE UPDATE*
Dragley Beck footbridge has been closed for some time. The bridge was been declared unsafe by a structural engineer who advised there is severe damage to the bridge arch. There is no access to the Beck down the sides of the bridge at this time.
Westmorland and Furness Council are scheduled to commence work on site w/c 14th September, with all in-river works being undertaken within the governed river working window.
The deck slab, complete with the CB Arts architectural railings, will then be lifted into position in October once fabrication is complete. The railings will then be connected to the precast slab.
Ulverston Town Council have commissioned the architectural railings with CB Arts which will depict the life of Sir John Barrow, and are a real work of art. The design is fantastic and we can’t wait to see it completed!
We are very excited to see our outdoor community gym install complete at Ford Park! The equipment can now be used, and includes a piece of equipment accessible to wheelchair users.
Each piece of equipment has a QR code to show you how to use it and also provides access to various workouts based on ability.
Director of Ford Park, Sam Ronson couldn’t resist a quick test of the equipment! We’d like to thank Ford Park for enabling us to do this installation.
We will be holding an official opening very soon, watch this space!
As part of the Mayor of Ulverston’s Civic Sunday event this year, Cllr Michelle Scrogham would like to present two awards; one for an adult and one for a child under 18 who have made an outstanding contribution to the community of Ulverston.
Do you know an adult or child who has done something really special in the community? An unsung hero? Someone who looks out for their neighbours or someone who has done something for the benefit of others?

Ulverston Open Gardens is back, taking place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June.
£3 per adult on the day to visit all 15 gardens. (You only pay once) Children free of charge. Some gardens have refreshments.

The Sir John Barrow monument is now open for the 2023 season!
Opening times will be 1pm – 5 pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to October, weather permitting. The Union Jack flag will be flying next to the monument when open.
Last entry to upper levels 15 min before closing.

Thank you so much to everyone who braved the weather and came along to our Coronation event at Lightburn Park! In true Ulverston spirit we had a fantastic turnout 
So many faces painted, lots of sports, football, train rides and lots of happy faces!
A big thank you to Ulverston BID for helping fund the event, Cllr David Webster for the kind donation of 50 free train rides as well as Zebedees Barrow for face painting and HP Activities for the sports.

The Mayor of Ulverston, Councillor Michelle Scrogham was very busy last week presenting commemorative Coronation coins to Ulverston primary school children. As a council we wanted to give something special to local school children that they could keep to remember this important occasion.
The Mayor was incredibly impressed by how much the children knew about our new King, some schools performed songs, some read poems and all children were impeccably behaved, they were a credit to their schools!
